Epic Bromances

Seinfeld: Not a Bromance

I was considering putting a post of Jerry/George or Jerry/Elaine, but it just didn’t sit right. Why aren’t Jerry and George bros? What I came around to is that they’re all too selfish. They don’t have it in them to wingman for each other. They gladly push each other down to get what they want. It’s exactly why they all got tossed in jail in the finale. They’re great friends, sure, but notice - they all despise everyone else and would probably hate each other too if it didn’t mean they wouldn’t have anyone to bitch to. Kramer is the exception, but he’s not grounded in reality enough to be anyone’s bro. He has great intentions, but is ultimately too unreliable for it to be an Epic Bromance.

So that brings us to another important facet of the Bromance: a certain amount of selflessness and loyalty. All of the Bros I’ve posted below get in their share of fights, but at the end of the day, they have each others’ backs.

The Wingman

One important facet of a bromance is the Wingman. If a Bro is hitting it off with someone, his wingman takes all steps necessary to ensure the desired outcome (short of, you know, roofies and such. Consent is sexy, people). Sometimes this means sacrificing your own hookup for the night, but every bromance requires some give and take.

“Wingman” can also be used more generically, a la Top Gun:

Iceman: You can be my wingman any time.
Maverick: Bullshit! You can be mine.

Most importantly, a wingman supports his Bro in any situation needed. He doesn’t desert in times of need, and hangs tough through good and bad. It’s this type of unconditional support that brings a friendship up to Bromance level.
